Almost everyone has trouble sleeping at some point. There are many reasons for insomnia. Sometimes, it’s only one or two sleepless nights. Often, it can be caused by stress. An important meeting or a family even, like a wedding, can cause you to lose sleep the night before, for instance. Some people deal with insomnia on a regular basis, though.

Trouble falling asleep isn’t the only form of insomnia, though. Trouble staying asleep is also part of the definition of insomnia. So, even if you get to sleep fine, if you wake in the night, you may have a form of insomnia.

Also, you can’t let other people dictate your sleeping schedule. You have to follow your own sleep pattern. Not every person needs the same amount of sleep. So, just figure out how much sleep you personally need each night. If you meet that nightly goal, wonderful, but if not then you could have to fix an insomnia issue.

There are several reasons for insomnia that could be affecting you. A lot has to do with how often you have the sleeping problem. In the short-term, you may not be able to sleep due to stress, being sick of withdrawals from some sort of addiction, such as alcohol. It could also be a simple case of too much noise or light when you’re trying to sleep.

Then there’s chronic insomnia. It usually has to do with a major mental or physical illness. For instance, depression can be a cause of chronic insomnia. Other things that could cause insomnia include sleep apnea, COPD and acid reflux, to name just a few.

There are several types of people who are at higher risk of having insomnia problems than others. For instance, women going through menopause often have trouble sleeping. So do older people, since their bodies don’t produce as much melatonin, a hormone that helps people with sleeping. Other insomniacs can include people who frequently get jet lag, students and night workers.

So, it’s good that there are plenty of treatments for insomnia. For example, prescription medications are one possible solution. Your doctor might suggest that you try one. Be aware that they can cause some side effects and some of them can be addictive, though.

If that doesn’t sound like a good idea to you then, regardless of your reasons for insomnia, you may be able to find a natural remedy for insomnia that works really well. One way to sleep better at night, for instance, might be to take melatonin supplements. There are also many other herbs and supplements that you could try to help you sleep.
